Studying abroad is so important for living in a globalized world. Having experiences in different parts of the world help both youth and adults become connected to the world. Listed here are study abroad and grant opportunities for both youth and adult.

Youth for Understanding

Youth for Understanding is a resource for Intercultural Exchange Programs. They have a long list of scholarships for youth to study abroad.
Youth for Understanding Scholarships for Study Abroad
Youth For Understanding (YFU), an international educational nonprofit, offers more programs and scholarships for high school students and recent graduates than any other study abroad organization. This year, YFU is offering more than 200 full and partial scholarships to help students’ dreams of international travel and learning become their reality.

Let your students, your school, your community, and your friends know about our exciting opportunities by forwarding this opportunity or requesting posters to display in your classroom. Additionally, nominate deserving students for study abroadwith YFU. To find out more about our programs, including diverse academic, service learning, arts, sports, gap year programs, summer and short-term (two week) educator lead offerings, visit the Youth For Understanding website.

U.S. State Department Scholarships for High School Students to Study Abroad

State Department Scholarships for High School Study Abroad
The U.S. Department of State recently announced scholarships for American high school students tostudy abroad. Applications are now being accepted for the following study abroad programs for U.S. high school students: 
  • National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) | Application deadline: October 29, 2015 
  • Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program | Application deadline: December 1, 2015
  • Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) | Application deadline: December 1, 2015 to January 15, 2016, depending on state of residency


These merit-based scholarships include international airfare, tuition, and program costs, as well as meals and living accommodations (often with a host family). The programs have no language prerequisites, and gap year students are encouraged to apply as long as they meet the age requirements. Visit the program websites or the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Exchange Programs website for specific information and application deadlines.

Enrichment Grants for Educators

Enrichment Grants Available for U.S. Secondary Level Teachers & Administrators
Application Deadline: December 1, 2015 | Application Information

The IIE AIFS Foundation Generation Study Abroad Enrichment Grants Program recognizes U.S. secondary level teachers (grades 6-12) who have shown to be outstanding advocates for study abroad. The program is a professional development opportunity for those teachers who have taken the Generation Study Abroad pledge and taken innovative actions in preparing their students for global citizenship and study abroad. Fifty (50) enrichment grants of $1,000 each are availableto secondary school teachers and administrators to conduct any learning activity in the U.S. or abroad that enhances their international outlook and global experience.

Did you know that the U.S. Department of Education provides grants to K-12 and post-secondary educators and administrators to study and travel abroad?


The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides short-term seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. The program offers educational lectures and activities specifically designed for the group, including visits to local schools and organizations, meetings with educators and students, visits to cultural sites. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new, cross-cultural curricula for their classrooms and school systems back in the U.S. 

In 2016, summer programs will be offered to Peru, India, and Senegal. The program covers airfare, lodging, and program costs. Participants should be prepared to pay a cost-share of up to $600.
